Rearranging the icons

You can change the icons around to your desire whenever you like. You can change the order, move icons from one screen to another, and change which and how many icons are in the lower section (not more than four).

You may have noticed that you have more than one screen for icons. You can move from one to another by pressing your finger to the screen and swiping across to the left or right to spin through the screens. There are small white dots along the bottom that shows you which screen of icons your on. The lower row stays the same as you move from screen to screen.

Typing poorly is faster

You may have noticed that every time you type out a note or message, you keep getting little pop-ups of a word that the iPhone is making a best guess at what you wanted to say. The suggestion is based on some smart software that looks at the keys on the keyboard next to the letters you typed and checks to see if you just typed a bit off based on words it has in it’s dictionary.

Using the technology to your advantage.

As you are typing, the system will make constant guesses at what you are trying to type and show it to you. To accept that word, just tap the keyboard space bar. You do not need to finish typing the whole word.

Quick tips for Using the keyboard

When your typing using the screen keyboard. The letter is put into place that you just lifted your finger off of. That is to say, the system doesn’t see you press the key, it sees you release the key.

This is important since if you press on the wrong key, you don’t have to release and backspace over it. Instead, you can just slide your finger over to the correct key and lift your finger. You will get that final letter, not the one you first pushed on.

You can use this to your advantage when you want to capitalize a letter… tap on the shift key and then without lifting your finger slide over to the letter you want and lift your finger.

Need a umlauted letter. When you choose a letter, continuing to hold you finger on it. After a few seconds a strip of optional versions of that letter will appear to choose from.

Sometime you just need to Restart

The iPhone is much more than a ‘phone’, or even a ‘smartphone’. As with several other phones on the market, the iPhone is really a really small computer. It has a operating system that allows you to do many things; access a camera and take photos, arrange data like contacts and dates, and install applications.

As time goes by, opening and closing applications (even just the applications that came pre loaded from Apple) bits of data and parts of programs start gumming things up. What you need to do is what you do to your notebook or desktop computer. You need to shut it completely off and restart it. Like almost all computers, you can do this with your iPhone without loosing any information (games will still know your score and your calendar will all be fine, etc…)

Restarting your iPhone is very similar to taking a picture. But instead of holding down one button and tapping the other – to restart you push both of the hardware buttons. One on the front of your iPhone (the ‘Home’ button – has a square in the middle but no other label) and the button on the top at the same time. And hold those buttons down.

After a few seconds, the screen on your iPhone will go blank and just have a slider image near the top. You now release the buttons and slide the image across the screen (under the image is text telling you to slide to shut your phone off). Once you slide it from left to right, the screen will come up with a spinning icon for a few seconds then go blank.

To start your iPhone back up, press the button on the top for a second and release. A white Apple log will appear while the systems starts back up and then go away leaving your normal screen showing.

If you ever happen to see that slider on the screen and you didn’t want to restart your iPhone, follow the instructions on the screen to abort the shut down. This could happen if you are taking your phone out of your bag/pocket and happen to hold the two buttons down at the same time.

Screenshots from your iPhone

Your telling your friend about how you have your apps arranged on the screen, or you want to explain a screen in an application your in, or maybe there is a Web site you want to share a image of.

When the occasion arrises that you need a screenshot;

Hold down the main front button (called the ‘Home’ button)

Then press and release the button on the top of the iPhone

The screenshot is saved without changing anything your doing so you can continue on. Just go to your Photos area to view the screenshot. From there you can email it or retrieve from iPhoto the next time you sync to your desktop.
