I’m a fan of FaceTime… I travel so it has been a life saver to keep sane through seeing the face’s of family members when we talk online. Using either my iPhone or iPad, I can ring up family members and if they are on a WiFi network they answer and we chat.

There is a small limitation with FaceTime, it only works when both ends of the call are on devices connected to the Internet via WiFi. For those times I want to ‘video’ call iPhone to iPhone over the cell network, I have been turning to Tango. Like FaceTime, it’s a free app and it’s free to use.

Along with the 3G connection ability, there are other differences between FaceTime and Tango Video

Start the call with audio, once connected you can switch to video.

If the person your calling doesn’t answer, you can leave a video message (in-app purchase 5 for 99 cents).

No login/password required.

Friends can be found through the Tango people search.

There are some kind of animations you can add… but I have never played with them.

Works on iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4th-generation, iPad 2 (not the iPhone 3G)

Connects to more than just iOS devices – Windows Phone 7 and Android phones and tablets (3G and WiFi)
