Quick Tip: See the Web address before going there

When in the iPhone / Touch Web browser (Safari) and are viewing a Web site. You will have the usual links to other sites appear just like on your desktop browser. Normally you tap a link and are taken to another page or site.

Before making a jump from a tap on a link that you are not sure you will like the result. See where your going to be sent to by tapping and holding your finger on the link for a second or two. A pop up will appear showing the Web address the link points to.

Quick Tip: Moving through your Contacts

When looking for a name in the Contacts (Phone) list. You can go to the top of the list and Search, you can sweep your finger up/down the screen to scroll, or you can tap a letter on the right to jump to that letter group of names.

I must have too big of fingers, when I try and tap a letter on the right I never get the right one. But, a tip you can use is tap and hold on the letter area, then sweep your finger up/down. You will move through the names a letter area at a time.

Application Settings

You have installed a couple applications and now want to personalize them. But, unlike your desktop computer, there isn’t a pull down menu to get to your Preferences for each application.

Many iPhone and Touch applications do in fact have some Settings you can adjust. For example, Facebook let’s you adjust your ‘shake to reload’ and photo tagging, iBlogger lets you set up what your Footer text will be, QuickVoice has sliders to turn on/off the Rotate Interface and Level Meter settings, and most apps that require a login/password will allow you to change that info in their Settings area.

So, where is this magic Applications Settings area. In the ‘Settings’ app… From your applications icons launcher screen, tap the ‘Settings’ icon, then scroll to the bottom of that screen. The first time you visit you may have to wait a couple seconds as the system builds the list of apps that have settings you can adjust.

Tap tap – what a double tap gets you

Safari – when viewing a Web site with multiple columns of text, double taping on one will zoom in so it is larger and just that column shows on the screen.

Keyboard Caps – the ‘shift’ key that normally capitalizes the next letter can be locked on by double tapping it. The key will turn blue so you know it’s locked on caps.

Zoom ‘out’ – after you double tap to zoom in on a Web site or a email, double tapping again returns the screen/text to the original view.

Video wide to full – double tapping the screen while a video is playing will change the aspect ratio. Normally videos play in wide screen that may have a black bar along the top and bottom. Changing the aspect ratio fills the screen but also cuts off the edges so you may loose a little bit of the action on the right/left sides of the video screen.

Force Quit an Application

When you are using any application on your iPhone or Touch, you can leave the application and return to the launcher screens of icons with a quick tap of the ‘Home’ hardware button.

Not a normal situation, but an application can get confused and hang… which results in nothing happening when you tap the screen or tap the Home button. Before you restart the whole system as we mentioned before here, you can just force quit the one application.

Force quit an application is as simple as… Continue reading “Force Quit an Application”
